Carnatic Vocal

Carnatic Vocal music is the classical music of Southern India. Shankar Mahadevan Academy provides the unique opportunity for students everywhere to learn Carnatic Vocal music from the convenience of their own home through a highly structured curriculum, a clear path for progression, and certifications for completion. Level Certificates are given to students at each of seven levels: Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha and Ni. Each level requires the student to complete the courses listed under it and pass the level exam. Students who are new to the Academy start with the first course in each of the levels, depending on prior experience. Entry into any level will require new students to take and pass the assessment for the prior level.

The Children series is specially curated to introduce young minds to the world of Carnatic classical music in a fun and engaging way. Through interactive lessons, children explore fundamental concepts like Shruthi (melody), Swaras(musical notes) and Thalam (rhythm), fostering curiosity and a love for music. Early exposure to music nurtures artistic expression and contributes to a child’s overall cognitive and emotional development

The Beginner Series focuses on establishing a solid foundation in Carnatic Classical Music. Students are introduced to simple Ragas while developing a harmonious blend of technical skills and creative expression. This training equips learners with the ability to understand the depth of both theory and practical aspects of this musical form, which in-turn enhances their ability and prepares them to sing complex raga

The Intermediate Series deepens the exploration of Ragas by introducing higher level of compositions like swarajathi-s and varnam-s. These compositions provide an understanding of complex swara combinations and enable various techniques that can be practiced with them. Students learn both familiar and new raga-s, allowing them to refine their technique and develop a more nuanced understanding of Carnatic Classical Music.

The Advanced Series guides learners to delve deeper into Ragas with higher level of compositions like varnam-s in various speeds(depending on the student’s ability) and krithi-s, focussing on gamaka-s, to create rich musical expressions and evoke various emotions. The courses focus majorly on manodharma sangeetha, focussing on alapana and swara kalpana, and also prepares the student for the level of performance. Theory aspects of music are given equal importance for the student to have a better understanding and connection between what they know and what they sing.

The Masters Series focuses on refining performance skills while deepening the understanding of Shaastra (music theory). It encourages continuous inquiry and research, fostering a holistic approach to musical mastery.

Electives offer a diverse range of Carnatic musical genres, including varnam-s, krithi-s and samudaaya krithi-s (like Sri Thyagarajs-s pancharatna krithi-s) enriching both learning and performance.
